Stars Reach Promises Professions and Combat Upgrades
!games@lemmy.world Everybody's waiting for loops, right?" With that line in the latest developer video, Raph Koster summed up where the sandbox MMO Stars Reach stands in early access. The building tools keep getting richer, but the gameplay loops that give players a reason to log in every day are still largely missing. According to the team, professions and combat come next.
Details are still thin, and a full roadmap post is promised for next week. The stream did reveal how the developers are thinking. Koster admitted there have been "a lot of debates" internally over which professions should arrive first. Three candidates came up by name: xenobiology, rangering and foraging. None of them is a pure crafting job or a straight combat role. All three focus on exploring the world and dealing with what lives in it. That could give the game a second pillar next to its building systems, which have received most of the attention so far.
Combat is also set to get considerably more attention. No specifics were given, but the promise reads like an admission that fighting has not been the game's strong point so far. Smaller fixes are in progress too. The GovBot is being revised, and storage tech is being updated so players have more room for their materials. That matters more than it sounds, because running out of storage space is one of those quiet annoyances that pushes people away from big building projects.
Despite the headline promises, most of the stream showcased content that is already in the game, especially the recently added paints, finishes and building pieces. In the closing Q&A, viewers asked about enemy behaviors, the UI, a circular floor piece and paintable weapons. Half the questions were about how the game plays, the other half about how it looks.
Stars Reach has reached a familiar point for early access sandboxes: creative tools draw people in, but tools alone rarely keep them around. Koster's candor is refreshing. The open questions are whether the new professions will tie into combat, the economy or both, and whether next week's roadmap brings concrete timelines or building content keeps stealing the spotlight. What would make you log in every day: living-world professions, better combat, or more ways to build?
