RuneScape Havenhythe Part II Brings Largest Area Expansion

!games@lemmy.world After 25 years, RuneScape just got bigger than ever. Jagex has released Havenhythe Part II, which it calls the largest area expansion in the MMORPG's history. It closes out the Havenhythe storyline with a battle to defend the region against the Sangujine threat, giving the expansion a real climax rather than just more map to wander.

Getting in takes more than logging on. The new region is members-only, so free-to-play accounts are locked out. Even paying members must first finish the Secrets of Amberfell quest and reach four skill thresholds: Crafting 51, Herblore 55, Mining 65 and Smithing 60. These aren't endgame numbers, but returning players who left before Amberfell may face some grinding before the finale opens up.

The headline reward is an ultra-rare hatchet that Jagex calls best-in-slot, meaning the strongest option for that equipment slot. A woodcutting axe may sound modest next to a new sword, but in a game where gathering skills matter as much as combat, it is exactly what dedicated players chase. The region also adds Bololin Pearls, collected while exploring and traded for rewards and upgrades. Chima Moss Spools give fletchers a new source of bowstring materials, which could reshape the skill if it proves efficient.

The release comes at a busy time. Jagex has been tidying up the game and plans to purge microtransaction items later this year. A record-sized region, a story finale and a best-in-slot item suggest the studio is betting on substance, not nostalgia, to keep members paying. That fits a wider MMORPG market where veteran games fight to hold their core audiences, newcomers like Aion 2 head into early access and rivals like The Elder Scrolls Online face a tough stretch.

The open question is whether pearls and moss spools give Havenhythe lasting pull, or whether the region empties once everyone has their hatchet. Is gating a record expansion behind membership, a quest and four skill levels a fair reward for invested players, or a wall that keeps newcomers out?
