Rollerball CPC: HAL's 1984 MSX Pinball Lands on Amstrad

It runs the game's original code directly on the Amstrad, so the ball physics and gameplay stay exactly as they were on the MSX. For a pinball game, where everything depends on how the ball moves, that choice matters.

The full package is intact: the multi-screen table, the original bumper mechanics, the bonus lanes and the scoring systems. Nothing was cut to make it fit different hardware.

The presentation, however, was rebuilt for the CPC. The port keeps the MSX's native resolution of 256 x 192 and uses dithering in the CPC's Mode 1 to approximate the MSX colour palette. The table's sections are linked by smooth vertical scrolling, and a double-buffered display eliminates screen tearing, which is rare polish on 8-bit hardware. The soundtrack and sound effects were rearranged for the CPC's sound chip rather than roughly copied.

There is one hardware requirement. You need a CPC 6128, or a 464 or 664 with a 128K memory expansion. Both keyboard and joystick are supported.

The developer, who goes by "Oldschool is beautiful," openly states that AI assisted with the code, graphics, sounds and text. That will please some retro fans and bother others, but the disclosure itself is clear rather than hidden.

The release fits a wider trend of games crossing over to platforms they never officially reached, such as Frogger Junior on the Amstrad GX4000 and Flashback heading to the Atari ST. The MSX scene is also busy, with MSXdev26 already underway. Running original code instead of rebuilding a game from scratch points to a growing preference for accuracy over reinvention, especially in physics-driven genres. Is that the better way to port retro classics, and should AI-assisted homebrew be welcomed or viewed with suspicion?
