Aion 2 Pre-Download Now Live on Steam Ahead of Early Access
!games@lemmy.world Aion 2 is almost here: NC has opened pre-downloads for its free-to-play MMORPG on Steam, one day before Early Access begins. Notably, the client is available to everyone, not only to players who already bought a pack.
Early Access starts September 30 at 6:00 AM Pacific, which is 9:00 AM Eastern. That head start is reserved for pack owners, and everyone else joins the free launch on October 5. By opening the download to the free crowd now, NC removes one launch-week headache: nobody has to pull multiple gigabytes while servers are being hammered and queues pile up.
Friend groups have some homework before logging in. Each data center region offers between two and eight servers, but choosing a faction cuts the available options in half. NC's own example: an Asmodian player on NA East can only pick between Israphel and Zikel. Anyone who wants to play together should agree on region, faction and server before creating a character, or risk rerolling on day one.
NC has already run a launch scale test to check how the servers hold up under real player load. The publisher is also preparing a closed beta for Astrae Oratio, a magical girl RPG shown around Tokyo Game Show. Aion 2 is clearly the headliner, though. It's a sequel to a name that still carries weight with longtime MMO players, and it now comes with a free-to-play price tag.
Opening the pre-download to non-paying players suggests NC wants a big crowd on October 5 rather than a trickle. For a free-to-play MMO, the first weeks decide a lot. A population that forms quickly keeps a game feeling alive, while a rough start is hard to shake off. The split between a paid head start and a free launch also invites scrutiny. Monetization is a sore spot across online games right now, from RuneScape's planned purge of microtransaction items to Quake Champions moving away from free-to-play, and NC's store policy after launch could shape how Western players see Aion 2 in the long run.
Two questions remain open: will the servers survive day one, and will the tight server count per faction hold up once the free wave arrives? After a difficult stretch for the genre, a smooth start would matter beyond NC. Are you jumping in at Early Access, waiting for October 5, or holding off until the monetization is clear?
